Opened on 7 October 2014 after a decade of work, the Mohammed VI Museum is the first in a series of cultural spaces, and is also the first major museum to open after independence. Located in the heart of the city of Rabat, 500 metres from Rabat train station, it is very easy to get to.
The inaugural exhibition featured 400 works by Moroccan artists such as Hassan El Glaoui and Mohamed Kacimi, who were also featured in the inaugural exhibition “1914-2014: one hundred years of creation“. Located in the centre of the capital, the building, which features classical Andalusian architecture, required a budget of almost 17 million euros.
Most of its exhibitions feature contemporary works of art, but it also hosted an ехhіЬіtіоn of works by Goya from 31 October 2017 to 4 February 2018, in addition to other Spanish artists such as Sorolla, Zuloaga, Saura, Tapiès, Chillida and Barceló on loan from the Banco de España.
More “modern” and even more prestigious, it was preceded from 17 May to 31 July 2017 by an exhibition focusing on Picasso, “Facing Picasso“, in collaboration with the Musée national Picasso in Paris, or, in 2016, an exhibition devoted to Giacometti.
A modern building rooted in Moroccan architectural tradition
The museum is a large, bright building. Its Moorish-style facade respects the architectural codes of the city of Rabat, put in place by Lyautey at the beginning of the Protectorate: white facades with elaborate stuccowork, complex arches, etc.

Inside the museum, there is a vast open central space, with a large skylight.
The collections and exhibitions are presented over a total of three floors (including a basement).
Additionnal areas
The museum also has an auditorium for conferences and a bookshop.
At the back of the museum, a restaurant, run by Cafés Carrion, overlooks the quiet Rue Tissa. It’s a very pleasant place to have lunch or simply a cup of tea or an excellent coffee after your visit.

Finally, as in all museums around the world, you can buy goodies …
