That’s definitely the most WTF conspiracy theory I’ve heard in the last few days.
As well as being, in itself, daft – like most conspiracy theories – it’s insulting to all the players, the manager, the King… and it goes to show that football really can make you stupid.
So, the conspiracy theory:
The Moroccan team are said to have deliberately lost to France
E. Macron is said to have phoned Sidna to ask him to ensure that Morocco allowed France to reach the final, and the King is said to have agreed.
Why is that?
For visas?
It has now been over a year since Morocco refused to take the simple step needed to end this crisis: agreeing to issue consular laissez-passer to Moroccan minors in France without legal status. The reason it has dragged on for so long is precisely because Morocco did not want to give in. And there was no urgency. There was no reason to miss out on the World Cup.
It is Macron who wants to visit Morocco. He had already said as much in August, before being rebuffed by Moroccan diplomats on the grounds that “nothing has been planned”.
And the reason a visit is now planned is that the visa situation has returned to normal. la situation des visas a été normalisée.
Not because we deliberately lost a semi-final.
How can anyone insult players and a manager to such an extent?
Not to mention the King.
To suggest, even for a moment, that this team would have agreed, for money, to shatter their wonderful dream for ‘something’, when they were fully aware of everything they stood for?
How could anyone imagine that every single player would have chosen not to dance with their mum on the pitch for the semi-final?
How could anyone imagine, too, that they’d have been stupid enough to risk it coming to light? Match-fixing always involves several people, and THEREFORE it always ends up coming to light. Especially at that level.
The Moroccan team took everyone by surprise; they went as far as they possibly could
At the start of the tournament, no one would have imagined that they would “agree to lose to France”, because no one would have expected them to reach that stage.
They had an extraordinary tournament; there were injuries, fatigue, and a match against one of the best teams in the world, according to Walid Regragui himself.
It would have been nice, of course, if she’d made it to the final. But no, that wasn’t the case. And whilst it’s a shame, statistically speaking, it’s to be expected. There’s no need to come up with something as complicated as the King asking her to lose to explain her defeat.
And as for Croatia, did Macron ask them to lose as well?
A lack of fair play is terrible. I admired Regragui and the whole team for what they achieved; I understand that, ‘just on principle’, people might take issue with the refereeing – besides, everyone has been constantly complaining about the refereeing, match after match.
But accusing your own team of being bribed just because they were knocked out in the semi-finals – having already pulled off a sensational upset – is more than just stupid.
And I wonder whether this theory would have emerged if they’d lost to another country? Or is it simply a reflection of the French people’s ambivalent feelings towards the Moroccans?
