Opened in 1952, Don Camillo is one of Casablanca’s oldest restaurants.
Discreet, in a small, unassuming street off boulevard Rahal El Meskini, a few metres from an old building (unfortunately in a poor state of repair) reminiscent of the Casablanca of the 50s and 60s, not far from Acima-Marjane Liberté, it deserves to be in your address book!
The menu is that of a classic brasserie, with a Spanish and Italian twist. The menu is renewed regularly, and includes simple but very tasty starters, such as marrow bone, ham cones garnished with Russian salad, and snails. The kind of deceptively easy dishes that, in reality, can’t stand mediocrity and understatement.
The main courses include great classics such as cassoulet, steack tartare, veal liver with parsley, and fish dishes when the tide is right.
The list of desserts includes such staples as chocolate mousse, as well as ‘old-fashioned favourites’ such as sorbet colonel (a mixture of lemon and vodka ice cream) and apple tart with a large scoop of vanilla chocolate.
At least three quarters of the menu is regularly renewed.
The wine list includes a ‘wine of the month’, Bordeaux and Italian wines. The restaurant also offers Moroccan and German beers, including a draught beer. There is also a fine collection of liqueurs (amaretto, limoncello, whisky, etc.).
Twice a week, there is musical entertainment on a small stage at the end of the room, very close to the public.
The waiters are extremely helpful (which is far from always the case), without being obsequious.
The price level is ‘medium-plus’.
In short, it’s a good place to eat – you’d almost say it was a ‘family restaurant’, if you weren’t in Morocco. You can have a great time with friends.
