Everyone was waiting for an official statement from Paypal at the conference held on Friday morning at the e-commerce trade fair. Paypal was there to announce, at last, the opening of a ‘real’ Moroccan Paypal.
Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. It seems to have been premature, with no announcement other than a clear intention to develop Paypal’s presence in Morocco.
Today, Paypal in Morocco is effectively a system restricted to holders of a (real) international bank card and therefore a convertible dirham account.
The paypal account is linked to the bank card, and funds are transferred to the bank account in convertible dirhams. Each payment is made by direct debit from the same bank account (it is not possible or useful to leave funds in the paypal account… even if there is money available, the funds will be debited from the bank account).
Although this system has enabled paypal to be set up, while respecting exchange control constraints, it is becoming an obstacle to the development of e-commerce in Morocco for Moroccans, who do not always have this famous convertible dirham account.
The possibility of working with a ‘real’ paypal account is therefore eagerly awaited.
Maybe next year?
