Located near Ouarzazate, Agouim was hard hit by the earthquake in September 2023. The places I photographed ten years ago no longer exist.
All posts about Agouim
Agouim is a small village in the High Atlas, an hour’s drive from Ouarzazate, at an altitude of nearly 1700 metres, in the valley of the Oued Assif, a green valley wedged between arid slopes of red earth.
The special feature of this village is the former Franciscan convent, which arrived here in the 1950s. They began by opening a dispensary – at the time, the nearest doctor was in Ouarzazate – then a cabinet-making and carpentry school, preparing around ten students for the CAP in three years. And finally, for the women, a “school-workshop” for embroidery, carpets and knitting, for which around 200 women still work today, grouped in a cooperative.
Unfortunately, Agouim is not a place where tourists stop. It’s a place where coaches and convoys of 4*4s from agencies don’t stop, even for a coffee, too close to Ouarzazate.
However, Agouim can be a pleasant stopover, precisely away from these over-touristy souks where you get harassed by shopkeepers.
And if you go through Agouim, you can also push on to Tainant, north towards Marrakech, where some beautiful rock engravings await you!
On the road between Ouarzazate and Marrakesh, the small town of Agouim is home to a cooperative that makes beautiful traditional Berber rugs, woven by women over many months.
Difficult to reach, especially in winter, in the heart of the High Atlas, the small village of Agouim is home to a cooperative that produces top-quality rugs and embroidery.
