Fez is one of the oldest cities in Morocco, and its medina is full of history. Nowadays, people tend to move to the new town, as, admittedly, living in the medina is not very practical.
Fez is a less frequent choice for expats, who are more attracted to Marrakesh or Casablanca. But this city has its charm – which also attracts many Anglo-Saxons. An intellectual and university town, it does not forget that it is the seat of one of the oldest and most renowned Islamic universities. The mayor of Fez is therefore trying to protect this history, the sensitivity of his voters, and the realism that is necessary when running a large city. The ban on alcohol was never intended to be generalized, but the law is perhaps more strictly observed there than elsewhere.
