Ksar El Kebir, or Alcazarquivir in Spanish, is one of the oldest fortress towns in Morocco, originally fortified by the Almohads. At the time it was called Ksar Ketama, or Ksar Sanhaja, after the Berber tribes. It was one of the key issues in the confrontation between Morocco, Spain and Portugal. The Battle of the Three Kings took place nearby. Finally conquered by the Spanish in the 20th century, after the Rif war, it became Moroccan again in 1956.

It was in Chefchaouen that Sayyida Al Hurra spent her childhood, educated by the best teachers, nostalgic for the charms of Al Andalus that even the real luxury of Chefchaouen could not dispel. It was also to Chaouen that she returned after being expelled from Tétouan.
