Tagrest (ⵜⴰⴳⵔⵙⵜ) began yesterday. It is winter, which is a feminine word like spring.
Depending on the region, Tagrest is welcome, as in the desert, where people can finally live in peace, or feared, as in the mountains of the Oriental, where every year animals die because of the cold.

The forty lyali begin today, 22 December, and last until 31 January. These are the coldest nights of the year. In the middle of this period, on 14 January, Yennayer arrives, the Amazigh New Year.
Every year, villages isolated by the cold
Every year, snowfall isolates villages. Morocco has become accustomed to aid plans to clear roads and deliver food and blankets to prevent human tragedies.
This year, the severity of the snowfall, which reached over two metres in just a few days in some villages such as Tineghir, has raised fears of a very harsh winter.
