Kounouz Biladi comes back in 2009
The Kounouz Biladi (the treasures of my country) operation, which was abandoned in 2008, is being resumed this year.
The aim is to develop domestic tourism by offering Moroccans very good-value deals.
The prices are attractive, with the 200 hotels selected offering double rooms for 260 dirhams with breakfast, up to 560 dirhams for a 4-star hotel. (However, these prices need to be put into perspective depending on where the hotels are located. In Ouarzazate, this is a normal price for a hotel like those we offer).
This operation will run throughout 2009.
There are other discount options for Moroccans, independently of Kounouz Biladi, and in particular the obligation for all hoteliers to give a 25% discount on the total stay, when the stay is more than two consecutive nights. This applies to all residents of Morocco and to all Moroccans.
(If this applies to you, don’t forget to let us know).
Kounouz Biladi was not a success
Its ‘rebirth’ in 2009 was followed by another in 2012, but as Kounouz Biladi is neither a cat nor a phoenix, these multiple rebirths were a bad sign.
It has to be said that with a 25% discount for more than two nights, it’s hard to offer ‘more’.
Except that… the 25% applies to an official price, displayed at the entrance to the hotel and well above the going rate.
But what killed Kounouz Biladi were the major online booking sites, Booking and others, which demand that the hotel always offer its lowest prices.
Moroccan hoteliers are therefore caught in the crossfire as they try to lower their prices.
And hotel stays are still expensive for large Moroccan families, who prefer to stay with a family or rent a flat, preferably in the informal sector.
